Motion Sickness on a Cruise: How to Prevent and Treat It Vacations for Canadians

motion sickness cruise

Today’s forecasting tools can offer lots of advance notice about weather conditions. While a ship can’t completely avoid all weather, it does have the ability to maneuver or change course to offer a more comfortable ride when possible. Of course, but remember that cruise lines have no interest in a cruise that tosses the ship around. Even if passengers don’t get seasick, it doesn’t exactly make for a fun vacation. We can tell you after taking dozens of cruises, that’s simply not the case. There are times where you can feel the ocean’s movement, but it’s usually slight.

Ahoy! Why Sailing on a Hosted Cruise is the Ultimate Adventure

Dan Boater points out that reading anything, even on a screen, can worsen the symptoms of motion sickness. Snacking on dry crackers can alleviate sea sickness, so be sure to have some on hand. Also, packing anything with ginger or peppermint, such as candy or chews, can also help when motion sickness hits (via Navigate Content). Peppermint and ginger essential oils are also a great oil combination for relieving nausea.

The Truth About Seasickness

Luckily, cruise lovers have an array of options for seasickness prevention, from medicines and seasickness patches to Sea-Bands and even cabin-booking tricks that can alleviate motion sickness. Acupressure bands are a great way to combat seasickness on a cruise ship. These bands use pressure points on the wrist to alleviate nausea and dizziness caused by motion sickness. Motion sickness is a common problem for people who travel by boat, and cruises are no exception. The swaying of the ship can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and headache.

Fresh air

However, exhaustion can exacerbate the effects of motion sickness and make you more susceptible to feeling ill. Be sure to get a good night’s sleep before setting sail, so your body is rested and ready to fight seasickness if it rears its ugly head. When it comes to enjoying your vacation, nothing can change things faster than being seasick on your cruise. Meanwhile, it’s said that motion sickness occurs in about 25% of people.

Acupressure wristbands, ginger pills, and candied ginger are among the nonmedication ways to deal with seasickness, and some people swear by them. It sounds completely counterintuitive, but you’ll also feel better if you aren’t hungry, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which recommends eating small amounts of food frequently to help prevent motion sickness. The CDC also recommends staying hydrated, while limiting both alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.

According to medical professionals, seasickness is more prevalent in children and women (though children under 2 seem to be immune from the ailment). To reduce motion sickness, choose a stateroom in the middle of the ship on a lower deck. Another way to test the waters is to find cruises that have a lot of opportunities to port and get off the ship. Cruise ships are well known for their wide selection of luxurious foods, but if you’re worried about motion sickness, a lot of those foods are probably things you should avoid.

Also, some seas are known to be particularly choppy at certain times of the year. Select one that has less actual time out on the water, such as one that has many port days and minimal sea days. Or, similarly, one that has built-in “overnights” where the ship stays in port. You should avoid sailings that have more than one or two consecutive sea days. According to ocean experts, seasickness arises when your brain perceives a conflict between some key senses.

The best way to deal with motion sickness is to prevent it before it happens. There are a lot of things you can do before you hop on a cruise that can spare your vacation headaches and upset stomachs. – Don’t stay below deck for an extended period of time, especially if you aren’t around any windows. Your inner ears will feel the rocking of the boat, but all your eyes will be able to see are solid walls.

To prevent seasickness, be sure that you choose the best stateroom location possible. If you’re new to cruising and unsure how you’ll feel, choose a mid-ship location. Over-the-counter medications like Dramamine, Meclizine (also known as Bonine) or diphenhydramine (commonly called Benadryl) can also help prevent or alleviate seasickness.

Dimenhydrinate lasts in the body for no more than 4 to 6 hours, though. The formula composition of both Bonine and Dramamine is the main difference between either drug. While the two are effective in reducing your motion sickness, Dramamine can make you more drowsy than Bonine. So, it’s important to follow the recommended dosage instructions carefully – taking more than what’s prescribed won’t increase effectiveness and can only lead to unwanted side effects. You will be charged for medical services onboard and in the port of call where you are disembarked.

If a ship experiences an outbreak, the crew will take measures to increase cleaning efforts and reduce self-service food options. If you get sick, it's best to remain in your cabin until symptoms pass so you won't spread the illness to other passengers. Essentially, to lessen the chances of you or your kids experiencing motion sickness, you want to be on a sailing that is not rocky. Thus, the first thing to do is select one of the newer mega-ships because they have state-of-the-art stabilizers that control the types of ship swaying that contribute to disequilibrium. If you forgot to pack medication and are feeling ill, ask at the guest services desk or the medical center—they will likely have medicine and the pills are often free. Often they have seasickness pills available at no charge for passengers who need them.

While there is limited scientific evidence of their effectiveness, many people find them helpful as a non-invasive alternative to medication. Or, wet a napkin with cool water and hold it on your neck or wrists. You know how, on a seesaw, the closer you are to the center, the less likely you are to feel the extreme swings of the seesaw motion? “Sometimes the best advice is to avoid that activity,” Dr. Honaker says. If your diagnosis is mal de debarquement, your doctor will likely send you to a physical therapist who specializes in vestibular rehabilitation. This is an exercise-based program that can help improve balance and reduce dizziness-related problems.

They simply convince themselves that being on a ship will make them ill. On the other hand, for those who can forget about it, it's often smooth sailing. Lack of sleep and exhaustion can make you more susceptible to motion sickness. Many diseases prevented by routine vaccination are not common in the United States but are still common in other countries. Crew members and fellow travelers often board a cruise ship from destinations where some diseases are more common than in the United States or where vaccination is not routine.

I also listen carefully to the captain’s daily announcements, which usually include a weather forecast for the day ahead. Still, you can ensure a smoother ride by sticking to destinations with relatively calm waters. Popular cruise itineraries tend to be on routes that are less prone to rockiness, such as in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Alaska’s Inside Passage.

Finally, if you can wait until you are in a port of call, every port area will have some sort of small shop that you can buy items you forget — including medicines — for cheaper than on the ship. That said, there’s no doubt that some people are more sensitive to motion than others. So, yes, out of the thousands of passengers, there might be some who still get sick. “While it is very common for individuals after a cruise to have a perception they are in motion for 24 hours or so, it is very uncommon for it to prolong,” she says. Your doctor likely will review your medical history, look for other symptoms and make sure there’s no other illness causing your discomfort.

In this case, too, wearing a patch for the duration of the cruise is not warranted. Cruise tip – Bring along a refillable water bottle, to stay hydrated on your cruise. Your travel agent will be able to help you navigate the possibilities (pun intended), as a rule of thumb, the Western Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico tend to have more stable seas. A travel agent can help you to pick the best cabin for you, and look out for any other cabins to avoid. These are the most desirable cabins because there will be less movement in the middle of the ship.

Cruise Ship Travel Travelers' Health CDC

motion sickness cruise

Check CDC’s webpage for your destination to see what vaccines or medicines you may need and what diseases or health risks are a concern at your destination. Stay clear of heavy, greasy meals that can upset your stomach and make you more susceptible to motion sickness. Instead, stick to lighter fare, like fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Below, we cover each point in further detail to help you figure out the best course of action for your seasickness.

Consider Natural Seasickness Remedies

So, if you experience severe motion sickness, it might be worth avoiding cruises that travel long distances across open water. Those little circular patches you see behind the ears of so many cruisers are most likely a prescription drug called scopolamine transdermal system. It is often prescribed for situational nausea and vomiting after surgery. However, it is also useful for motion sickness, as you might experience on board cruise ships. The medication contained in the patch is slowly released into the wearer's system over the course of three days.

Useful Things to Pack For Your Cruise (Including 17 You’d Never Think Of)

Most cruise ships will have one or two doctors and up to four nurses onboard to treat sick passengers. Medical staff must meet certain training requirements, but they do not have to be certified in the United States. They work in the ship's medical center, usually found on one of the lower decks. It’s strong and not for everyone, so ask your doctor whether it’s right for you. The patches are also expensive and may not be covered by your health insurance.

Why does motion sickness happen on a cruise ship?

But if you have to take it at a different time of day, the pill could put you to sleep and make you miss key events on the cruise. They’re easy to get a hold of, and you only have to take one or two pills to start feeling the positive effects. The instructions say that the SeaBand takes 2-5 minutes to become effective. I put them on once I got onboard, and the ship set sail in the early evening, around 5 P.M. Since they work through pressure points, it seems important that they stay on the right pressure point. But I’m not an expert at finding them, and the bands are liable to slip off the right spot.

To provide context, when I would get seasick without trying any remedies, I felt like I would rate my sickness feeling at 7 out of 10. My room was located on the 10th floor, just between the middle and the back of the ship. It was close enough to the middle that I didn’t feel seasick while inside the room.

Use Acupressure Bands

Each ship is designed to give you as smooth a ride as possible without compromising the multiple activities available onboard and the spectacular on-deck views. Book a mid-ship cabin to experience the least amount of motion on board. Cabins near the front or back of the ship are more prone to movement, making it harder for travellers prone to seasickness.

If you know the rocking of the waves might upset your stomach, plan ahead by packing some medication for seasickness. Antiemetic drugs, or medicine that keeps one from feeling nauseous, are readily available over the counter in drug stores nationwide. Your doctor can prescribe stronger scopolamine medicine in patch or pill form as needed. Either way, be sure you remember to pack these medications to keep you from feeling sick as you cruise to your destination.

You may also have heard the expression, “mal de mer”, which is French for sickness of the seas. Motion sickness happens due to repeated or continuous movement that affects our inner ear and sense of balance. As the cruise ship sails, some people can be affected by this motion. For me, early symptoms of motion sickness include lightheadedness and a mild queasy feeling. I try and catch it at this early point, and after more than 20 cruises, this has worked for me. If you’re going on a cruise and concerned that you might get seasick, you’re not alone.

Natural Seasickness Remedies Like Ginger and Apples Could Also Help Onboard

They fit comfortably around your wrist and have adjustable pressure settings. It’s essential to wear them before you begin feeling symptoms of seasickness though, so be sure to put them on before setting sail. Modern cruise ships have stabilizers, for a relatively smooth ride wherever you cruise. On big ships with thousands of passengers, you’ll typically feel little movement.

They work with acupressure buttons to prevent symptoms of seasickness and many cruisers have very good results. Seabands are natural and contain no medication, plus, they’re reusable. No amount of warm sun, delicious drinks and Broadway-quality entertainment is enough to distract from a powerful bout of nausea. The medical staff on cruise ships are available to help with really severe cases of motion sickness, but preventing the ailment from happening in the first place is, obviously, preferable. Ward off seasickness by carefully choosing a stateroom and picking up a few useful items before leaving home. Dr. Shore notes that there are also lots of natural remedies that can help alleviate motion sickness.

A great option for those who fear getting seasick are the mostly calm inland waters traversed by river ships. Looking for something to try before you travel to your destination? Some studies have shown a correlation between getting proactive acupuncture treatment and minimized seasickness. This method focuses on the same area as acupressure wristbands, but it could be useful if you want to try preventing seasickness before you even set sail. You might find it difficult to rest the night before your cruise – who wouldn’t be excited before a trip like this?

Take a little care when choosing your cruise and stateroom, as well as when packing your bags, and you'll be able to manage the symptoms of motion sickness more effectively. If you start to feel the telltale signs of nausea, head out onto the deck for some fresh air. This change of environment will alleviate the rise in your body temperature (save that for a day on the beach in the Caribbean), and the wind in your face will help reduce uncomfortable sweating. While there, focus on your breath to bring yourself back down to a calm and relaxed state.

According to Healthline, putting pressure on an acupressure point along your wrist called the nei-kuan can bring relief from motion sickness. Rather than trying to administer the pressure yourself, you can purchase anti-nausea bands to just slip on your wrists when you feel sick (via Prevention). And of course, there are over-the-counter medications you can purchase ahead of your cruise that will provide relief.

Carnival Corporation & plc Wikipedia

There is no hint that the cruise line might relocate to a completely different area, such as moving closer to Port Canaveral or another busy cruise port. Carnival Corporation, parent company of Carnival Cruise Line and other great brands, is the global leader in the cruise industry, leading the way in innovative and sustainable cruising to deliver memorable vacations and build borderless connections. But we never forget to create unforgettable happiness for our guests during their extraordinary cruise vacations, all while honoring the integrity of every ocean we sail, place we visit and life we touch. For Carnival, the sale is a chance to unlock a potential windfall from decades of real estate growth in Doral, where property values have soared alongside the area’s condo boom and the popularity of Donald Trump’s Blue Monster golf course. But it will also mean the company will be navigating a red-hot market to find new office space in the Miami region.

Arison, with his son Micky, now chairman of Carnival Corporation & plc, launched the company with one converted ocean liner, the TSS Mardi Gras, from Miami. According to Bloomberg, the current headquarters of Carnival Corporation & plc has now been listed for sale as the company is seeking to downsize its overall office space. Carnival Corporation & plc is currently based in Doral, Florida, a city in the Miami metropolitan area just west of Miami International Airport and 12 miles (19 kilometers) from PortMiami, through the often congested downtown region. The cruise company will soon be moving, however, as the space is being listed with commercial real estate broker Cushman & Wakefield Plc.

Former brands

It has both a river cruising division and an ocean one that operates a mix of Bahamas- and Malta-flagged ships. Carnival Panorama, another sister to Carnival Vista, entered service as the cruise line's flagship on December 11, 2019. She became the first new ship to homeport on the West Coast since Paradise (now Carnival Paradise) in 1998. At 101,000 GT , it became the largest passenger ship in the world at the time and first to exceed 100,000 tons.

Where is Crystal Cruises based, and where are Crystal cruise ships registered?

Celebrity Cruises is part of the Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. family, with headquarters near Royal Caribbean's in Miami. Most of its vessels are registered in Malta, but a couple are flagged to the Bahamas. Carnival Cruise Line first moved into the Doral office space – located at 3655 NW 87th Avenue, Miami – in 1983, having paid $16.6 million (USD) for the real estate at that time. While the cruise line does not appear to be relocating outside of the Miami area, the downsizing in office space can be a smart financial step as office roles have changed since the company first started in the location more than 30 years ago. The port of call will open with one dock capable of handling Carnival’s largest ships, the 6,000-passenger Excel class. They are an invaluable resource, helping yousave time, money, and avoid the stress of vacation-planning.

As president, she leads a company with a fleet of 24 ships, sailing nearly six million guests annually and employing more than 40,000 people who hail from 120 nations around the globe. Christine has served the company in this role since 2015 after a successful tenure as president and CEO of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which represents the $120 billion global cruise industry. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines.

Privately held Viking Cruises, which operates both river and ocean divisions, is registered to do business in Basel, Switzerland, with U.S. headquarters in Woodland Hills, California -- about a half-hour from Los Angeles. Its river ships are flagged to Switzerland, and its oceangoing vessels are registered in Norway. Falling under Carnival Corp. & plc's list of cruise brands, Seabourn sails a fleet of Bahamas-registered ships and has its headquarters in Seattle. Privately owned MSC Cruises is a division of the Mediterranean Shipping Company, a cargo shipping entity registered and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. (The office for its U.S. operations is in Fort Lauderdale.) Its fleet is largely flagged to Panama, but there are some Maltese and Italian exceptions.

The company has 120,000 employees globally and serves about 13 million cruise vacationers per year. At the same time, however, the company will need to search for new office space. There is no indication yet where that might be, though it would be logical to secure a space closer to the cruise terminals, if possible.

This downsizing aligns with a broader trend toward more streamlined utilization of office space, potentially influenced by hybrid work arrangements and technological advancements. By the summer, when the company traditionally makes the most money, Carnival Corporation hopes to have all ships in the fleet operational. Carnival Corporation also re-opened all of its eight owned and operated private destinations and port facilities. Currently, eight out of the nine brands in Carnival’s portfolio are operational. By the end of 2021, the company had 50 ships back in operation, representing 67% of total capacity, returned 65,000 crew members to work, and carried 1.2 million guests. Part of Genting Hong Kong Ltd., Crystal Cruises has its corporate headquarters in Los Angeles.

The company is now looking to downsize to about 300,000 square feet (27,871 square meters) of new office space in the Miami area, according to a person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named citing private discussions. According to Bloomberg, the company is now looking to downsize to about 300,000 square feet of new office space in the Miami area in the next two years. Debuting in summer 2025, the port of call will welcome ships from Florida ports Port Canaveral, PortMiami, Tampa and Jacksonville, as well as six other U.S. ports. Carnival Corporation’s stock went from $71.65 in 2018 to an all-time low of $8.49 in April 2020. Yet, a lot of work remains to be done if Carnival Corporation is to come back on top once again. Chairman of the Board Micky Arison provided an update to Carnival Corporations’ operational status today. Located 15 miles from the Port of Miami, the 470,000 square feet Doral headquarters has served as Carnival’s base since it was acquired in 1983. The Miami space is being listed with commercial real estate broker Cushman & Wakefield Plc. For its new space, the company is looking for about 300,000 square feet in the Miami area, a reduction of about 36 percent. The company has listed its current headquarters for sale and has tapped Cushman & Wakefield to broker a deal. Despite its status as one of the world’s largest cruise lines, Carnival is aiming to downsize from its sprawling 470,000-square-foot headquarters at 3655 NW 87th Avenue in Miami, Bloomberg reported.
